I acquired my first show dog in 1971, an
Afghan. I had studied the Complete Afghan and had picked a dog with a seemingly
good pedigree. He was quite course even for the time and lacked coat. I had
serious problems keeping him well groomed and decided to take a professional
grooming course.
The people who owned the school had a Borzoi
and Sasha was my introduction to the breed and I was star struck. My first
Borzoi was Am. Can. Ch. Sirhan Nochenka and she was an amazing bitch. I was
very lucky to have acquired her as my foundation. In all the years of showing
her she was never out of the ribbons either in the U.S. or Canada. Those were
the days of entries in the U.S. of 30 bitches and even the shows in Canada
regularly had a large entry compared to today. A year later I added Ch. Sirhan
Blistai. Over the years I have bred 9 litters and have produced 15
champions, many of them group winners. At one time or another I have also owned and exhibited a Scottish
deerhound, Standard Smooth Dachshunds and a Doberman.
My judging education started with my first
dogs. I have always wanted to learn about structure and was just generally
interested in other breeds. Elsie Murray was an amazing woman and a great
mentor to many of us and I became involved with her study groups long before I
thought about judging myself. In 1984 I applied for my first permit and at this
time I am qualified to judge the Hound group (2), Working group (3), Herding
group (7), the first half of the Toy group and on permit for the second half of
Toys plus I judge Best in Show. I belong to a local judging group that gets
together on a regular basis to study various breeds and regularly attend dog
shows to ring side judge when possible. I have judged in Canada, the US. and
Australia and am a member of the
Canadian Dog Judges Association.
In 1996 the last of my lines passed away and
due to business commitments I was unable to have a Borzoi for some time. In
1997 I was judging in Australia and was given the name of Jean Clare of
Ryazan
Borzoi in the UK. I e-mailed her and was put on her waiting list. In Feb 2007
she e-mailed to let me know she was having a litter and was I still interested?
Thus began my second beginning with Borzoi. I picked up my lovely Ryazan
Natalie in May and brought her home. Having now 14 acres that are dog fenced it
was my perfect Borzoi property. Located on a great hillside and all in pasture
it is a perfect place to run. I am very grateful to Jean Clare for sharing her breeding with me.
I have a lovely dog and I am looking forward to getting her into the show ring. I have
had inquires as to whether I will be breeding her and at this time I can say
that anyone interested can contact me. I do not have plans to do this before
she is finished her Canadian and American Championships. Natalie is pointed
in Canada and I am looking forward to getting her out in 2009.
Phaedra
Porchai of Endymion joined us November, 2009. “Sasha” is enjoying the farm
life and we will be adding pictures as he grows.
